October 19-20, 2025

$100 DONATION TO THE FEATHER RIVER RAIL SOCIETY AND WESTERN PACIFIC RAILROAD MUSEUM FOR EVERY MEMBER THAT BOOKS ON THIS EVENT

Member Chris Skow, who is one of the founding fathers of the Feather River Rail Society and Western Pacific Railroad Museum at Portola, is operating two days of steam pulled charters on the Nevada Northern Railway out of East Ely, Nevada October 19-20, 2025. He will donate $100 to our society and museum for every member that books on this two-day event. This is a great way to help raise much needed funds preserving the legacy of the Western Pacific Railroad.

Over the years Chris has operated many charter photo trains on the Nevada Northern for the benefit of the railfan photographer. During this two-day event the railway will provide two steam locomotives and four different train consists plus the use of their newest piece of equipment, a classic doodlebug railcar, operating on both the Hiline and Keystong lines with many photo run-bys.

Besides all of the steam action there will be workshop visits to inspect and photograph this operating museum′s classic diesel fleet of which they have Baldwin, Alco, GE and EMD motive power. Numbers 81 a Baldwin 2-8-0 built in 1917 and number 93 a Alco 2-8-0 built in 1909 will do the honors of pulling these photo trains. Each day will feature two different train consists. One in the morning and another one in the afternoon.

Did you know that the Nevada Northern Railway was the last Nevada Bonanza mining railroad built over a century ago to service what would become one of the largest copper mines in North America? Today this railway is considered the best preserved shortline in the west. Closed to regular freight service in 1983 by Kennecott Copper, this railroad has been preserved in its original condition, from the workshops, station, yards, rolling stock, and motive power. After closure, Kennecott donated a good part of the Nevada Northern to the White Pine Historical Foundation. The Nevadan Northern Railway has been designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark for its role in the industrial history of the United States.
