SP 2873 wears the unique paint scheme developed for the Southern Pacific Santa Fe Railroad, an attempt to merge these two competitors to the Western Pacific in the 1980's.  The merger was denied by government regulators and never occured.  The 2873 was preserved as an example of the mega-mergers that dramatically altered the American railroad industry during the 1970's and 80's, a trend that also spelled the end for the WP.
